Part of the Kalahari was once a primeval lake fed by four rivers. The whole place is now a flat, pristine jumble of sand and thorn that has a beauty of its own. Deception Valley in the Central Kalahari is one of the more remote areas in the Kalahari. The Game Reserve is the second largest in Africa covering approximately 52,000 sq/km of pristine wilderness and is the largest open eco-system remaining in Botswana.
The Central Kalahari hosts huge herds of gemsbok, springbok, wildebeest and hartebeest attracted to the area by the flush of sweet grasses that flourish in the ancient valley following the rains. There is also a good chance of seeing the Kalahari lion, cheetah, brown hyaena and meerkats.
The extensive mineralised pan system within Khutse provides an important habitat for wildlife attracting herbivores to graze on the grasses of the pans, drink the mineralised water during the rainy season and to lick salt during the dry season. These herbivores in turn attract predators, such as lion, cheetah and leopard. Bird enthusiasts will enjoy the wide range of birdlife that can be seen here.
